I wish my Alma Mater, Howard Community College in Columbia, MD a happy 40th birthday. Though some may say community colleges aren’t for the most intelligent, and I initially had reservations about going there, I ended up there not because of my level of intelligence but because that’s all I could afford at the time, and it was very convenient.
However, once I began taking classes, I loved everything about it and it really proved to be an 'Alma Mater' which roughly translates into Nourishing Mother from Classical Latin. Looking back, attending Howard Community College was the best thing that happened to me. I probably wouldn’t have graduated if I went anywhere else because I was working and had to provide for myself.
It was a much smaller school then than it is now and the staff was and is still very kind, nurturing and encouraging. The school’s motto is, “You Can Get There From Here,” and I must say that I’ve come a mighty long way since I was a student there. However, I still go there very often to do my own work because I love interacting with students, being in the school’s academically focused environment, and enjoying all the extra-curricular activities they have to offer.
Here’s wishing Howard Community College, the very best in the future. If you are looking for a great school where you’ll be nurtured and taught to be your absolute best, think about Howard Community College because you can get anywhere you want to go from there.
