ARTSCAPE 2010 IN REVIEW

Artscape has come and gone, bringing with it live music, good food and drinks, visual and performing arts and exhibitions. Regular, artsy types and the old and young came out to play in full force.

Located on Mt Royal Ave and Cathedral and Charles Streets in Baltimore, this free and fun event was enjoyed by all. It was three hot and steamy days of fun, made bearable, thanks to the three three misting tents and cold drinks. There was also plenty of ice-cream to commemorate July being National Ice Cream Month.

LIVE PERFORMANCES:
Friday July 16th: Maysa and Musiq Soul Child
Saturday July 17th: Jackie Greene, Cold War Kids and Gov’t Mule.
Sunday July 18th: Graham II, Dimensions of Funk, Toubab Krewe, Rebelution and
Wale.

STREET THEATER
The street theater had wholesome family fun with dancers, jugglers, storytellers, comedy acts, music and interactive audience shows. The newest addition, LOL @Artscape hosted by comedian Seaton Smith brought some funny comedians namely: Ayanna Dookie, Bryan “City Boy B” Harris, Brian Parise, Mike Way and Apama Nacheria.

FASHION
Fierce, fabulous, fresh and funky fashion exhibitors of apparel and accessories were available for attendees to view fashion shows, buy unique pieces and learn great runway walk techniques. The exciting fashion design competition and $1,000 cash prize was won by Karen Garalde.

THEATER & OPERA
The Theatre Project and the Brown Center offered storytelling workshops and opera performances including: The Baltimore Concert Opera, The American Opera Theatre, Opera Vivente, Lyric Opera of Baltimore, Dahlia Flute Duo, Corpus Christi Church Tours, Organ Concert, BaySax Quartet, Saturday Mass, Larksong A Capella Ensemble and the Bach Concert Series. Several children’s puppetry programs were also featured.

DANCE
Dance fans enjoyed a full complement of style movements and approaches to dance. It featured Goloworld, Ballet Theatre of Maryland, Ryan “TK” Johnson of Step Afrika, Full Dance Company, Men of Dance, Graham II of the Martha Graham Ensemble, Dimensions of Funk - a collective of dancers specializing in different hip-hop and underground dance styles including locking, house, punking, b-boying and more.

FILM
The film industry was aptly represented. The Mike Kuchar Showcase, a collection of new and classic short films of the underground film maker was presented on Friday July 16th.
The following shorts were on every hour:
Animated shorts: Jackhammer, Pigeon: Impossible, Reach, Ledo + Ix Go To Town and Seed.
Avant – Garde Shorts: Duet, LoopLoop, Media Archeology 2110, Near the Egress, Voice on the Line and Ghost Train.
Drama Shorts: Bikini Lighters, Monroe St. and Slow Pitch in Relief.
Shorts Stew: Attackazoids, Deploy!!, Junko’s Shamisen, Hallelujah! and Gorilla Revival.
Offbeat Comedy Shorts: Adelaide, The Late Mr. Mokun Williams, Delmer Builds a Machine and Planet Sun.

VISUAL ARTS
Crazy Ray’s Art Car Lounge, by Renee Tannillo displayed one of a kind seating and lighting, while Art Cars displayed several fascinating cars.







Moving pictures, an interactive video project which allows filmmakers to shoot short films with festival attendees was great.
A comic strip - an exhibition of comics, illustrations, graphic novels and works installed in a 60 foot long glass wall and a tent was available for attendees to create their own comic strips. Wild Nothing at the Metro Gallery, Whatam City: Crossovers at the Pinkard Gallery, Where It Belongs at the Jane Fonda Gallery, Death Race 2000-A live soundtrack and film screening, Midway III and Midway Banners at Charles Street Bridge were memorable.

The Jane & Walter Sondheim prize which awards a $25,000 fellowship to an artist working in the Baltimore region to support the development of new work was won by Ryan Hackett of Kensington, MD

FAMILY ART PARK EXHIBITION
Family Art Park exhibition included an activity tent and art workshops for kids.

MARKET PLACE
The Artist’s market consisting of ceramics, digital, drawing, glass, items for the home, jewelry, mixed media, musical instruments, painting, photography, sculpture, and wood was a nice addition.

BETASCAPE
Betascape, a three day interactive and educational series of demos, exhibits, workshops, and social events and activities focused on innovative, cutting edge, and experimental technologies. The goal of the program is technology idea generation and exchange. Attendees were able to create circuits, view robots, and play locally created video games.

DIY@ARTSCAPE
Do it yourself at Artscape introduced many talented attendees to creative processes which yielded professional results in mono printing, stencils and paper cutting, book making and book altering.

There was so much to do; thankfully Charm City Circulator was on hand to bus people around. This year's event was very memorable. Here’s looking forward to next year’s Artscape!
