Happy Women's Equality Day!

 Bella Savitsky Abzug (July 24, 1920 – March 31, 1998)

To all my sisters out there, happy Women's Equality Day! Women's Equality Day is a day proclaimed each year by the United States President, currently, President Barak Obama to commemorate the giving of the vote to women throughout the country on an equal basis to men. Women in the United States were given the right to vote on August 26, 1920, when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was certified. The amendment was first introduced many years earlier in 1878. Every president has published a proclamation for Women's Equality Day since 1971 when legislation was first introduced in Congress by Bella Abzug. This resolution was passed designating August 26 of each year as Women's Equality Day.

We enjoy so many benefits because of the hard working and conscientious women including Ms. Bella Abzug, who went before us to fight for women's rights. We stand on the shoulders of so many women to enjoy the liberties and priviledges we now do, so we must not take our liberties or these women who fought so hard for women's rights for granted. The only way we can show our appreciation is continue the work where they left off the best way we can. So, my question to you is, "What can you do to assist the women's equality cause?" Take some time to think about it and I'm sure you can find several ways in your own circle of influence.

More on Bella Abzug:

Bella Savitsky Abzug (July 24, 1920 – March 31, 1998) was an American lawyer, Congresswoman, social activist and a leader of the Women's Movement. In 1971, Abzug joined other leading feminists such as Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan to found the National Women's Political Caucus. She famously declared "This woman’s place is in the House—the House of Representatives" in her successful 1970 campaign to join that body. She was later appointed to chair the National Commission on the Observance of International Women's Year and to plan the 1977 National Women's Conference by President Gerald Ford and led President Jimmy Carter's commission on women.
