Featured Book--My Life in Three Acts

I'm currently reading the book, My Life in Three Acts by Pam Grier, the Blaxploitation actress. This book is a great eye opener. I would never have guessed so many things that occurred in her life. However, the part I am particularly saddened by is the fact that she was gang raped by her cousins at the tender age of 6 years old. The experience changed her from a secure child into an insecure stutterer. The reason I was affected by what she said is that it appears that this occurrence is very prevalent. I was at an event at Howard University where Ms. Susan L. Taylor, formerly of Essence Magazine, spoke on living fearlessly. Below is what she shared on how prevalent it is for women to be touched inappropriately.

"I am not here by accident. My parents are from the Islands and I grew up wishing I was born into another family, but I thank God for my family because some of us have been touched inappropriately. Only a few women haven't. Raise your hands if you were not touched. You see, only a few hands are up. I thank God for my family, because I wasn't touched inappropriately, but my father touched me with a belt."     http://sociablesusan.blogspot.com/2010/11/ms-susan-l-taylor-speaks-on-living.html
