Featured Organization - Us TOO International

Chapter Services Manager,
Terri Gibbons Likowski at the 2011 AUA Conference

Do you or someone you know have Postrate Cancer? If your answer is yes, US TOO Prostrate Cancer Education & Support is an organization you need to know about. Us TOO International Prostate Cancer Education & Support Network is a grassroots, registered 501(c)(3) non-profit prostate cancer education and support network of 325 support group chapters worldwide, providing men and their families with free information, materials and peer-to-peer support so they can make informed choices on detection, treatment options and coping with ongoing survivorship. The organization was founded in 1990 by five men who had been treated for prostate cancer.

The mission of Us TOO is to help men and their families make informed decisions about prostate cancer detection and treatment through support, education and advocacy.

Receiving the news that you or a loved one has prostate cancer is traumatizing. Life is suddenly out of control and fear takes hold. Often, feelings of helplessness, guilt, isolation and anger emerge. No one needs to face prostate cancer alone. Us TOO provides the forum for sharing, caring and learning through its many programs and services designed for both men with cancer and their loved ones.

In addition to providing education and support programs, Us TOO is an active advocate for patients. We are committed to making sure patients have access to the programs, medications, treatments and health care professionals they need for the best possible outcomes.

A member patient advocacy organization of the National Health Council, Us TOO International has achieved compliance with the Council's Standards of Excellence, maintaining the highest standards of organizational effectiveness and public stewardship.

Just as pink is to breast cancer, blue is to prostate cancer. Us TOO wants to increase prostate cancer awareness and for people to see more blue, or SEA Blue, with SEA standing for support, educate and advocate – the primary components of Us TOO’s mission. At Us Too, you'll find someone to talk to who understands.

Sociable Susan At The Maryland SPCA

Sociable Susan is always out and about in the community. Earlier today, I was at the Maryland SPCA to learn more about the organization because I have always loved dogs and actually had one when I was growing up.

It was truly an eye opening experience. I had to think long and hard to remind myself that I can’t have a dog in my life right now, but I’d encourage anyone who’d like to have a dog and is sure that they’re up to the challenge of keeping one to feel free to consider adopting one and visit the good people at the Maryland SPCA.

However, if you are like me and can’t have a dog at this point in your life, feel free to take them donations or volunteer your time. For more information, visit http://www.mdspca.org/

Change.org H.S. / Rakheem Bolton Issue Petition Signature Request

In the fall of 2008, a Texas high school cheerleader (known as H.S. in court documents to protect her identity) was locked in a room and raped by a fellow student at a house party. Fast forward to February of 2009: H.S. is trying to resume her old life as a cheerleader. She's cheering at a school basketball game, but her attacker, Rakheem Bolton, is on the team -- he's shooting free throws. And a circle of administrators is telling H.S. that if she doesn't cheer for him by name, she can't be a cheerleader anymore.

H.S. refused. She was kicked off the cheerleading squad, berated and publicly humiliated by school officials, including Silsbee District Superintendent Richard Bain. H.S. and her family fought back -- eventually suing the school to reverse their decision, arguing that it violated H.S.'s right to free speech by booting her for a symbolic gesture. And H.S.'s story ignited a national outcry, covered on ABC and in Sports Illustrated. But the court said that her school had the right to remove her. And to add insult to injury, the judge ordered that H.S.'s family pay her school's legal fees -- more than $35,000.

Now school officials have a choice: They can further punish H.S.'s courageous stand by accepting the money and causing financial hardship for her family. Or they can refuse to do so. Public pressure on the school system continues to mount. A petition on Change.org has nearly 20,000 signatures -- more than twice as many people as live in the school's entire town -- but there's been no announcement from the superintendent.

You can help by adding your name. Sign the petition today to tell Silsbee Superintendent Richard Bain to apologize to H.S. and not make her pay more than $35,000 for her school's legal fees.

Asabi Eau De Parfum

The Yoruba culture is very rich. One of the most important aspects of the culture is naming because Yoruba people believe names influence people's lives.

One of my names, my "Oriki" to be exact, which roughly translated means praise poetry name, Asabi (pronounced Ashabi) is the name of the new Eau de parfum by former Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria and socialite, Mrs. Nike Oshinowo - Soleye.

Asabi is a very meaningful name which means selected for birth which roughly translated means a particular child was so desired and hand picked for birth.

I didn't know I shared the same “Oriki” with Mrs. Oshinowo - Soleye, an entrepreneur who wears many hats which she has now added "perfumer" to. I have admired this lady from a distance for many years. More grease to her elbows.

I wish her well in the marketing and promotion of her new perfume which bears my name, Asabi.

The Wise Tortoise

Picture courtesy of The Green Turtle

In Yoruba folklore, the tortoise is known as the most cunning animal. Void of natural weapons to attack other animals, and no other defense mechanism other than its ability to recoil into its shell and “play dead”, the tortoise outsmarts other animals by its ability to think, eavesdrop in other people’s conversations while hidden in its shell and manipulate its way into and out of situations. There are numerous stories of how the tortoise out smarted stronger and more agile animals and over came crippling adversity or insurmountable challenges by being wise.

The tortoise just knows how to use what it’s naturally endowed with to get what it wants. That is true wisdom, which is universally applicable. As a matter of fact, as I write this I know even human beings who are just like that. As the Yoruba adage goes, it’s the same way it is for humans that it is for animals.

So be like the tortoise, if life throws you lemons, add sugar and water, make lemonade and start a business selling ice cold lemonade people can’t refuse.

A word is enough for the wise...
