Time’s they are a changin’ is what Bob Dylan sang so many years ago and that statement can’t be truer now with American Airlines’ parent company, AMR Corp., filing for bankruptcy protection on Tuesday.
The company says it was forced to file because of high labor and fuel costs and the weak economy. Some are saying American Airlines will have to focus on terminating its underfunded pension plans and getting wage concessions from workers. Employee unions leaders say they'll fight to look out for the workers' interests.
However, I would caution that both sides while fighting for what they believe in, that a job where you get paid less, is better than no job at all and since the world is now smaller, and workers are available anywhere, to remember that and not push them into importing low wage workers from other countries.
Oh well, as we all know that the only constant thing is change and this is just another one of many that have already happened and many that will happen in the future…
