However, right now, there’s a down side. Williston has jobs, but not enough housing for now. So, people who moved there from many of the 50 states in the US are living in other people's basements, campers, vans, trucks, and their cars. Some shave and clean up at the local Walmart in the morning. Desperation due to lack of jobs has been taking people there because they just want to have a decent life.
The boom is due to oil tycoon, Harold Hamm, the billionaire son of share croppers, who is now a billionaire several times, thanks to the largest field by far in North America that’s all his. You may wonder why there is an oil boom now, the reason is that the oil has always been there, but it was too hard to get to before new technology emerged last year to get to the oil. And as you know, oil booms have a dominos effect therefore; Williston needs to hire people for other types of jobs in other industries as well. The local hospital needs staff. The government needs employees from teachers, to clerks to cops. The most need in the oil industry is for truck drivers, Harold stated, that he know someone who need 500 truck drivers right now. However, mechanics and pump handlers are also needed.
