Natural Hair Sorority
The natural hair movement has inspired a group of young women at Howard University to take things a step further by founding their own sorority to celebrate their natural locks.
Founded on July 4, 2011, Pi Nappa Kappa is for natural hair women who pledge to "adhere to a high level of supreme and conscious living." The main goal of this natural hair organization is to free women of color from the stigma of wearing their natural hair and "educate, inspire, and uplift" people to flaunt their natural roots around the world.
There is no doubt that if you walk around Howard's campus on any given day, the number of young women who have ditched relaxers, which some jokingly refer to as "creamy crack," has increased. The reasons women make the transition from relaxed to natural hair differ. Some do it to feel liberated, some do it to have healthier hair and some make the transition to simply "try something new."
If you would like to become a member of Pi Nappa Kappa, the deadline is Dec. 9.
