To be a good teacher that is culturally responsive, it is essential to do the following:
Be consciously aware of rigorous materials that support curriculum goals in multi-cultural themes and ideas.
Be aware of students’ backgrounds and ethnicities, when teaching all parts of the curriculum.
Offer rigorous learning experiences in the context of students’ cultures and understanding.
Know each student's culture, so you can step out of your comfort zone to relate to them and make the learning experience meaningful.
Provide rigorous instruction and resources that not only reflects the cultures in your classroom, but in the school, community, state, country and the world.
Teach with all students in mind. Be aware of each student's individual family backgrounds. Provide varied opportunities for students to feel connected to the curriculum.
Allow the students to make connections between the concept being taught and their own cultures.
Be aware of your own biases as you teach.
Be aware of your and your students prior knowledge and dialects.
Make students aware of people and cultures that are different to them.
Incorporating all cultures and backgrounds into daily instruction across all content areas is necessary.
